Description

  A gradual dip in the dry rock gives way to a pit of powdery sand, drifted

deeply.  The bright grains only serve to reflect sunlight even more

strongly, intensifying both the heat and the light.  The sand shifts

unpredictably underfoot, and sometimes seemingly of its own accord.  The

gusts of wind acquire a stinging quality as they pelt exposed eyes and skin

with sand.

  Miring through the blistering, shifting sand remains a great chore. 

Occasional islands of rock provide a brief respite from the endless

trudging, although not the unbearable heat.  Nothing stands tall enough here

to cast even the slightest shadow.  What few there should be are eliminated

by the reflection from the sand.  A high, forboding cliff blocks further

passage north and east, its many crags and crevices brightly illuminated by

the unhindered sun.
